The Heathrow Community & Environment Awards are a source of support for schools, voluntary organisations, community groups and local authorities.
There are two types of schemes available: 1) The Small Grants Scheme which awards grants of up to £2,500 six times per year and 2) The Large Grants Scheme which awards grants of over £2,500 and up to £50,000 up to three times a year.
Under each scheme, grants will be made to exciting local community projects focusing on five themes: ‘reduce, re-use, recycle’; ‘climate change and energy’; ‘protecting and enhancing our environment’; ‘bringing communities together’ and ‘developing skills’.

Projects working with disadvantaged children and young people in the UK (under 18 years of age).

Disadvantages experienced by children and young people include:


Illness, distress, abuse or neglect
Any kind of disability
Behavioural or psychological difficulties
Living in poverty or situations of deprivation

There are four general grant deadlines each year: 15 January, 15 April, 15 July, 15 October.

Berkshire Community Foundation manages funds on behalf of a range of different donors and funding bodies. We have a variety of grants available to voluntary organisations or groups established for charitable purposes ranging from £50 to £10,000.

Type of project or activity funded
We support voluntary activity within Berkshire. Any organisation established for charitable purposes can apply provided there is a formal structure which will allow for monitoring of activity and feedback to the Trust. Groups should be able to demonstrate that any grant received will make a real difference to the people or community.

Esmée Fairbairn supports registered charities and not-for-profit organisations. We fund core costs and project costs. These may include running costs such as staff salaries and overheads. We will fund items of equipment only if they are essential to the work we are supporting. It supports work that focuses on the UK’s cultural life, education, the natural environment and enabling people who are disadvantaged to participate more fully in society.

Restoring local heritage and conserving our natural heritage with projects such as historical buildings and landmarks,collections in museums, oral history, the countryside, language or local customs and traditions. Activites which encourage people's involvement with and understanding of our diverse heritage.

Advice Surgeries in London

HLF hold monthly advice surgeries for ‘Your Heritage’ projects (for grants £5,000- £50,000) on the first Wednesday of the month at our regional office in London. You can reserve a 45 minute slot with one of our development staff between 10.00am – 1.00pm and 2.00pm - 5.00pm.

We will also provide you with advice and support to give you the best chance of success.

Type of project or activity funded
Community Cash Awards are grants to help young people set up a project that will benefit their community.You just have to come up with an idea for a project that will improve life in a local community in the UK. Maybe a new basketball court, a music studio, a youth club, sex education workshops in schools, a youth advisory board, even a local magazine.

Projects must:

  • be run and managed by people between the ages of 14 and 25
  • clearly benefit the local community
  • benefit the people running the project; and
  • be a new or developing project

Specific funding also available for:

projects using football to help the community
young people (aged 14-17) involved in a youth project doing the ‘Community Space Challenge’
young people who are involved in a Kickz football project
are an asylum seeker, refugee or from black and minority ethnic groups. Funding has been donated by the Islamic Development Bank and Department of Communities and Local Government
projects promoting and tackling issues around anti- gun, knife and gang violence.

There is no maximum or minimum grant amount. Grants can take the form of core funding (including salaries and running costs), development funding, project grants or capital grants for buildings or equipment.

We are most interested in helping smaller, under-resourced organisations which offer direct services and which involve the people they work with in their planning. The groups we fund don’t have to be registered charities; we can also make grants to other groups as long as they have established charitable objectives.
