Slough Community Network Why do we need a community network? In 1996 people in Slough took part in a survey that was organised by the Race Equality Council called the Additional Support Programme. Some people who were interviewed said that they felt that they did not have influence over decisions that were made in Slough. What is the Slough Community Network? Through a series of events open to community groups throughout Slough, Slough Community Network will provide great opportunities for you to meet with other community groups in Slough. It will give you the chance to come and prioritise what is important for Slough. What form will it take? Slough Community Network will include networking events like In Good Company, training events and participatory planning workshops that help groups to influence the changes they want to see in Slough. It will give you the chance to share information with other community groups in Slough and with statutory organisations. It will help to focus your issues and how you can achieve them. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Slough Community Network Meetings

At the Slough Community Network meeting on 16th February, the proposal for a new governance structure for the network was ratified. This will be a management committee made up of the Community Champions and chair and a vice chair who will be appointed by the committee at their first meeting. It was agreed that further members of the network may be co-opted onto the management committee. SCVS will continue to provide administrative support to the committee but the network is now at an exciting stage where your representatives can drive forward it’s priorities. You will be pleased to hear that the network has 87 member organizations made up of Slough’s voluntary and community groups. This provides a strong force to influence change around the issues that are important to our sector. If you would be interested in joining the management committee for please contact Sara Willcocks tel: 01753 524176. Email: sara@sloughcvs.org.uk It was very encouraging to hear back from our Community Champions at the Network meeting in December about progress on the issues they are working on. Elections for this year's Community Champions took place at the Slough Community Network (SCN) meeting on 16th February 2010. Each Community Champion has been elected to campaign on 1 of 14 important issues for Slough, that have been agreed by you at the Children and Young people’s forum, the Community Care Forum and SCN meetings. They will be campaigning on behalf of voluntary and community groups that are part of Slough Community Network. Many of the issues identified as a priority last year will continue to be campaigned on this year. At December’s SCN meeting, network members also identified personalisation as a new issue they would like to be championed in 2010. In December two new Community Champions were co-opted; Janine Edwards and Adrian Hailer who have been voted in as Community Champions respectively for children and families and the environment. At February’s SCN meeting new champions, John
Spandley, Sajidah Chaudhary and Jerry Severwright were also elected. John
will take up promotion of sports provision in Slough and Sajidah will
be working with Vijay Gupta and Nazar Lodhi to promote Community Cohesion.
Sajiday will focus on disability and equality, and Jerry Severwright,
who has much experience working for the benefit of mental health service
users will champion this issue. If you don’t yet know these wonderful
folk you will enjoy getting to know them as they represent you this year.
